Geocaching 101

Geocaching 101

I’m sure you are thinking “what the heck is geocaching?” Well, I always describe it as a modern-day treasure hunt, only the treasure map is your smartphone or GPS and the treasure is a box of dollar store trinkets. There are nearly 6 million geocachers and over 2.6 million active geocaches worldwide—there are probably caches near you right now. What is a cache? Literally a cache is “a collection of items of the same type stored in a hidden or inaccessible place.” In geocaching, a cache is simply a container that geocachers hide and find using GPS coordinates… caches come in all different shapes and sizes–anywhere from micro-sized, where there is just enough space for a very small log (a piece of paper to sign when you find the cache) to large ammo cans …

By making purchase through these links, I receive a tiny commission which helps to fund my margarita habit (and maybe an occasional date night). Thank you. After many, many geocaching trips, I have made a science of packing the perfect “go bag” (a smallish, drawstring backpack) so that when we get the urge to go geocaching we can just run out the door. Truthfully, the only thing you REALLY need to is a smartphone or a GPS unit and the coordinates to a cache. But I have found the items below that are extremely helpful to have when you go geocaching. Summertime Blues

Growing up, I spent a lot of time outdoors.  Especially during the summer months. My brothers and I were outside for as many hours as possible each day, playing with all the other neighborhood kids. After we installed a pool in our backyard everyone would come over to our house first thing in the morning to swim for pretty much the entire day. …
